Yamba visitor takes out Black Opal Cup

27 May, 2010 01:04 PM
Our big weekend of the Black Opal Cup and the Barriekneal shield turned into a great time. Participation numbers were a little disappointing, but everyone who played on Saturday or Sunday enjoyed themselves and that is what matters.

The winner of the Black Opal Cup on May 22 was Colin Cromack, a visitor from Yamba. Colin had 41 points to win by one point from Jenny Underwood.

The winners of the men’s stableford were Alan Huskinson in A Grade, David Schafer in B Grade and Colin Cromack in C Grade.

The winners of women’s stableford were Kay Hogan in A Grade, Jenny Underwood in B Grade and Helen Bruce in C Grade.

The winner of the Barriekneal Shield was Jenny Underwood with a personal best of 87 off the stick and a nett 64. Great game Jen, you have been knocking on the door to have a game like that for some time.

Joel McHughes won the men’s A Grade and John Ciprian won B Grade. Jenny Underwood won the women’s B Grade.

Visitors to the Ridge Golf Club at the weekend came from Gloucester, Eildon (Victoria), Toronto, Gulgong, Mudgee, Wowan (Queensland), Yamba and Brewarrina.

The cup and replica for the Black Opal Cup were donated by Noel and Chris Underwood of Underwood Slashing. Sunday was sponsored by Barriekneal Housing for which we are grateful.

The amount of work put into the course by the grounds committee and the cooking of the food by our local women was greatly appreciated.

Captains Chris Underwood and Alan Huskinson worked for weeks making sure there would not be any hitches. Thanks also go to the women’s captain Laurel Voeks for her help.

Wednesday’s competition for the women was the first round of the foursomes championships.

The daily winners of the nett were Kath Johnston and Kay Hogan with nett 75.5 and runners-up were Sally Williams and Jenny Burke with a nett 77.5.

Kath and Kay lead the championships, but with one round to go anything can happen.

The winner of the men’s veterans 12-hole stableford on Wednesday May 19 was Bill Murray from Yamba with 27 points. The runner-up was Pat Smith with 24 points.

Friday’s chook run held on May 21 was won by Ray Williams with 27 points on a countback from Laurel Voeks.

Chooks down the line went to Alan Huskinson, Wolf Moosmueller, Anna Bumbers from Eildon in Victoria, Jenny Underwood, Karl Voeks and Kay Hogan.

A club competition was also held on Sunday with 13 local players. Peter Glogauer was the winner with a nett 63 so he now becomes P1 again.

The runner-up was Kath Johnston with a nett 67. Balls went to Alan Huskinson, Kay Hogan and Chris Underwood.

Next week’s games will be as follows:

Friday May 28: Chook run, hit-off from 8.30am to 3pm.

Saturday May 29: Canadian foursome medley, hit-off at 12.30pm.

Sunday May 30: Men’s fifth monthly medal, eclectic and putting competitions, hit-off at 9am.

Wednesday June 2: Women’s fourth monthly medal, eclectic and putting competitions, hit-off at 9am.

Wednesday May 12: Veteran’s 12-hole stableford, hit-off 1.30pm.

Until next week, take care. Look after each other and enjoy your golf.
