Opening day golf goes ahead despite big wet

11 Mar, 2010 11:10 AM
After much indecision because of the weather last Sunday March 7, the Opening Day went ahead with 14 players, who were very happy that it did. It was a very pleasant day for golf with just a slight mist of rain, but not enough to wet you.

The winners of the two-person ambrose were Noel Underwood and David Schafer with a net 65.

They won on a countback from Jack Bolton and Craig Thomas with the same score of 65. Balls down the line went to Alan Huskinson and Peter Glogauer, Mark Morris and John Ciprian.

After the game, everyone enjoyed sandwiches, which were prepared by the ladies. Then the presentation was made to the winners by Captain Chris.

Our president, Noel Underwood, was celebrating his 70th birthday that day so the members chipped in for a present and birthday cake. Thankyou to Jenny and Chris who organised it all. Congratulations Noel.

That is all the golf to report on this week because of the rain, but isn’t the country looking beautiful? The golf course looks as good as I’ve ever seen it.

The poor people trying to keep the grass down would like a little rest from the rain for a while as the mowers are running hot.

The club’s big news for the next few months is the weekend of May 22 and 23. Saturday will be a stableford game and anyone with a legitimate handicap and a member of any golf club will be more than welcome to play.

Sunday will be a stroke round for Indigenous (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders) players only.

Both men and women are welcome to play, however, a legitimate handicap and membership at a club is necessary.

As time draws nearer, there will be more news about this weekend. We are hoping that it will be the biggest weekend this club has ever seen.

Women’s Opening Day is on Wednesday March 17. The game will be a 12-hole stableford, so ladies, get yourselves ready and we will see you for a 9am hit off.

Please bring a plate for the day as we always have a little celebration for the first official game of the year.

Next week’s games will be as follows: Friday March 12. Chook run. Hit off 8.30am to 4.30pm. Saturday March 13. 12- hole, 2-stick events.

Hit off 12.30pm. Sunday March 14. 1st, monthly medal, eclectic, putting and match play qualifying round.

Hit off 9am. Wednesday March 17. Veterans 12-hole stableford. Please bring a plate.

Until next week, take care. Look after each other. Keep dry and enjoy your golf.
