The new Lightning Ridge Skate Park, which was finished just in time for the school holiday period, has been proving a hit among many of the local and visiting children who have been making the most of the site at every opportune moment.
Whether it be bmx bike, a skateboard, a scooter or even strange contraption called a ‘Ripstick’ every square inch of space is being used to get the greatest run-up they need to pull off some crowd pleasing tricks.
“We have been experiencing a drop in attendance with the Youth Centre because many of the kids were outside, but this is not a particularly bad thing,” Director of Corporate Carol Medcalf of the Walgett Shire Council said.
Future works that are in the process of being carried out will include shading and the erection of a shoulder height fence around the site, however, at this point it is still in discussion whether the park will be locked of an evening.
It was reported to council that parents had been sitting in their cars while they watched their children play and that an immediate solution would be to erect seating.
At this point in time council has decided against setting up lights in the area because daylight savings is keeping the site lit for hours longer than it is used.
