In the first game of the season it was great to see junior cricket back. We had four new players who fronted up for their first game and all played well. They were Steven Lane, Kyle McGovern, Winston McBride and Toby Thompson.
Nick Hill and Brendan Lollback were the captains for game one. Nick’s team made 57 runs but was outplayed by Brendan’s team which scored 130 runs.
Brendan won the toss and chose to bowl. Kyle, Samuel, Brendan and Rory Cheal all batted and defended well, hitting a couple of boundaries.
The wicket takers were Ben Ferguson, Archer Holz and Michael McGregor. Brendan took a good catch early in the innings as well as running out Nick after some great fielding from Michael.
Brendan and Michael opened the second innings with a 102-run partnership. Brendan finally retired on 49 and Michael on 41. Brendan’s total was equal to the junior cricket record which is held by him and Michael. Archer and Ben also batted very well hitting several fours each.
Sam Lollback was the main wicket taker for Nick’s team. A great catch was also taken by Winston to dismiss Archer.
In the second game of the season two of the younger players were captaining and we welcomed two more new players. Well done to Brendan and Ryan for turning up for their first game.
Archer Holz and Rory Cheal led the teams this week with Archer’s team the eventual winners by 20 runs.
Both teams were lucky enough to have Matt McGregor play as a batsman for their teams because of low numbers. Matt is actually one year too old for junior cricket, being in Year 8, but was allowed to play this week to boost the overall number of players for each.
Rory won the toss and sent Archer in to bat for his team making 117 runs. Max Hall and Matt opened. Max hit a personal best of 41 runs with six fours.
Matt showed he’s still got his touch making 65 runs with five sixes and seven fours.
One of the youngest players, Alister Curry, also made an excellent contribution hitting a boundary at the end of the innings.
Rory’s team made 97 runs with great efforts from Michael, Rory and Nick Hill. Again Matt batted well scoring 47 runs. Alister took a great catch and bowled a wicket as well as another wicket to dismiss the captain. Brendan Lollback also chipped in with a wicket too.
Our best player award this week went to Max and our most-improved award was a tie between Alister and Archer.
Thanks very much to Nathan Forbes and Rick Hall for umpiring our game. A reminder that training is from 5pm to 6pm Wednesdays and our games are played from 8am Saturdays.
