Yoga can help relieve stress

26 May, 2005 09:57 AM
Feeling stressed? A little under the weather?

Then yoga may be the answer to your problems in a way you never thought possible.

Yoga instructor Viki Murray has travelled to India twice to study the style of Svastha yoga and holds a diploma in the art and science of yoga with Svastha Australia.

The Svastha style has an emphasis on a personal approach and instructors teach students by adhering to fundamental principles.

Mrs Murray said Svastha differed from most yoga styles taught in western countries because it catered to the needs of the individual and was not delivered in a 'one size fits all' style.

"There is a concentration on breathing with Svastha yoga and basically if you breathe you can practise it," she said.

As part of her training Mrs Murray runs group programs or she can see people individually and organise a routine for students to practise at home.

Some prefer the motivation of a group class, others may have specific needs and the discipline to practice regularly as home.

"Instantly people will notice a greater sense of mental calm and steadiness," she said.

Mrs Murray also said there were techniques which would allow students to cope with stress and make an improvement in all of the body systems including metabolism.

"With regular practise students will notice an improvement in strength and flexibility,"

"Being a mining town, there are miners who suffer from back problems, particularly the neck and shoulders and yoga can help a great deal with this," she said.

Mrs Murray said there was a misconception yoga was just for women or you had to have great flexibility.

"You can sit in a chair and do it if you wish, we concentrate on conscious active breathing so if you can breathe you can do this," she said.

Mrs Murray said breathing was usually a passive, unconscious process. ]

While practising yoga, the focus stays with the breath.

"There is a connection between the breath, mind and body, this is what makes yoga so unique and as a result you begin to notice improvements in every facet of your body, as well as gradual changes in attitude," she said.

Mrs Murray said by attending one of her programs you would learn directly from the source taught in the traditional Svastha style.

"It is very much for the average person, anyone can do it," she said.

Mrs Murray has a five week program running on a Thursday morning from 6.30 to 7.30am with vacancies for four people.

There will also be a Monday morning class running for five weeks starting up from 10 to 11am from June 6.

Two evening classes are currently running and even though the classes are in the middle of a program inquiries are welcomed.

Mrs Murray said it does not matter what level you are at, she caters for all, contact Viki Murray on 6829 1130 or 0428 176 180.
