Work has started on constructruction of a dam to store excess stormwater, designed to supply irrigation to the sports fields all year.
The current dam is too small, particularly with the drought.
Talks will start this week to re-grass the soccer field and maybe install underground irrigation.
Money was transferred by the Walgett Shire Council during spring 2003 into a Shire Stormwater Fund that could be used to build a large dam.
This money was specifically to be spent on the Lightning Ridge soccer field.
Joe Wooldridge, Walgett Shire Council group manager of Infrastructure and Management said at the time, "The fields have been watered with bore water and effluent water which doesn't seem to be satisfactory".
