Work on hospital begins

24 Oct, 2002 08:33 AM
Work at the new hospital site started this week.

A Murray and Sons from Wagga Wagga have been sub-contracted by Thiess to set up drainage and sewer systems.

Site foreman John Smythe said they would also be establishing associated tanks and water supply and would make provision for fire protection hydrants.

This part of the project is expected to take three weeks.

At the same time the construction of piers will alo be undertaken.

"We initially anticipated the ground would be hard (to dig), but so far we've only struck a little bit of 'shincracker' the locals have warned us about," Mr Smythe said.

"It has slowed us down a little but we're now back on track," he said.

There are currently five men working at the site.

"However, once the modules start to arrive, about 40 to 50 fit-in contractors from across the State are expected to come here to do the finishing touches."

The first module is scheduled to arrive next month.

"Our site overseer John Higginbottom from Thiess has helped us a lot and so has council who have been very co-operative, because they've supplied the pipes across the road for the water supply."

He said while some vandalism had occurred at the site earlier, where a fence had been cut a number of times to give access to an unofficial walking path, they had now patched it.

Lightning Ridge Health Service manager Wendy Park said the hospital development was still on track to finish by next February.

"We haven't experienced any hiccups yet."

She said Lightning Ridge was to receive its modules after Brewarrina, which was in front of the Ridge on the list of hospital upgrades in the area.

"I think Collarenebri has received theirs, and Brewarrina is after them, so it won't be too long before we see our modules arriving," she said.

Ms Park said about 40 modules would sit on the hospital grounds to make up the entire facility.

"All up we're going to need to employ about an extra 18 nurses."

However, she said because the starting date for construction had been put back somewhat, no positions for staff had been advertised.

But Ms Park said any registered or enrolled nurses interested in undertaking the Reconnect Program could contact the health service on 6829 1022 for details.
