31 Mar, 2004 05:41 PM
Five new Work for the Dole places were allocated in Lightning Ridge in the latest round of offers from the Commonwealth Government.

The positions involve the Lightning Ridge Pony Club with the placements already starting on February 17.

The work involves completing a storage shed, extending the canteen, building seating, installing barriers, painting, paving and preparation of the grounds for polocrosse.

Deputy prime minister and Member for Gwydir, John Anderson said 12 work for theh dole projects were established in the Gwydir electorate.

"Unemployed people who participate in these projects will gain a valuable connection and insight into the world of work, and what employers are looking for when they have jobs to fill," he said.

"The success of Work for the Dole projects both in Gwydir and across Australia was testimony to the creative input and support of local communities.

"These projects go to show that Work for the Dole is a real community effort.

"Work for the Dole local sponsors OCTEC Incorporated, Lightning Ridge Pony Club, Central West Community College, Rylstone Kandos Show Society, JobLink Plus, Fairview Care for the Aged, Narrabri Jockey Club and the Western College of Adult Education and Community Work Coordinators who have organised these new projects have done an excellent job," he said.

Mr Anderson said 530 new Work for the Dole projects across Australia were announced in the latest round, providing places for 6454 jobseekers.

"Since the pilot round in late 1997, 17,101 projects had been approved, providing places for 280,679 Australians looking for work."
