What a weekend - Crowds flock to Ridge for Easter full of fun

31 Mar, 2005 09:54 AM
It was a weekend when the spectacular joined forces with the downright odd as goats, horses and bulls took most of the limelight.

Thousands lined the streets for the Goat Races in what was sometimes a dangerous occupation with many goats running in all directions.

This year proved to be a very festive occasion with event organisers commenting on the success of closing off Opal Street as well as Morilla Street.

Great Goat Race Committee member Maxine O'Brien said the festive feel of the day and the street stalls would be a feature in future years.

"The use of the street stalls down Opal Street worked really well," she said.

On the race track there was plenty to captivate the strong crowd including a goat race final that went right down to the last few metres.

It turned out to be a family affair with Fiona and Rod Williamson taking first and second in the championships.

The husband and wife combination also cashed in winning the Calcutta as well.

Mrs Williamson from Brewarrina said the only reason she was in the jockey seat was because she was the smallest.

Entertainment was also provided in between the goat races as the wheelie bin competition provided the crowd with some amusing entertainment. The wheelie bins were not easy control with many competitors running into one another.

Brett Longstaff from Newcastle was the winner of the wheelie bin race and kindly donated his winnings to one of the younger competitors in the final.

President of the Lightning Ridge Tourist Association John Murray said the Easter celebrations signalled the start of the tourism season for the Ridge.

"I thought the whole weekend went really well and in their first year, the street stalls worked really well, that is just going to grow year by year," he said.
