Western Shire Division calls for discussions with premier

04 Feb, 2010 12:32 PM
The Western Shires Division, which includes Shires that extend between Moree and Broken Hill, has called for a meeting with the NSW Premier Kristina Keneally this week to discuss some of the growing issues that are facing the residents in this zone.

Some of the problems include the issue of drought and a decreasing population but among these tough conditions was another call to reintroduce a regional air service for the State’s west.

President of the division Ray Longfellow said in December 2008 airlines ceased operating services to the towns of Bourke, Walgett, Cobar, Lightning Ridge and Coonamble.

“These effectively serviced approximately 25 per cent of north western NSW, providing an essential and desirable air service and linkage to Sydney,” said Mr Longfellow.

“The Western Shires Division knows that some action has been taken by the Government but wishes to discuss options to reintroduce the services.”

The Premier has also been invited to the Western Division Conference in Bourke on March 1 and 2 to discuss this issue.
