Water-ski park organisers call for community support

27 Jan, 2005 09:16 AM
Members of the community wanting a water-ski park have called on businesses and clubs to get behind the project.

At a meeting last Monday organiser Kelly Tishler said $10,000 needed to be raised for a hydrologist and surveyor to check the site.

Mrs Tishler said with further community involvement and support the project would have a much better chance of getting off the ground.

Mrs Tishler said she already has supporting letters from deputy prime minister and Gwydir MP John Anderson and Barwon MP Ian Slack-Smith.

The proposed park will be built in four stages with a skate ramp, kiosk, amenities and sheltered sites planned for the area.

Mrs Tishler said the park would benefit locals as well as attracting tourists and could be used for a range of pastimes including canoeing, windsailing and fishing.

"We don't even have a park in town, there's nothing for the kids to do," she said.

Co-ordinator of the Lightning Ridge Visitor Centre Richard Hoffman said the more water sports facilities in town the better.

"A recent report put out by Outback NSW said that water sports rated the highest in attracting tourists, especially families," he said.

Mr Hoffman said that while the town had a fantastic swimming pool with theme park and diving tower, a water sports facility would open up a new range of activities for locals and tourists.

A similar project has taken place in Goondiwindi where locals received a $5 million grant to construct what is now Lake Serpentine.
