Water soon to flow for Cumborah community

21 Nov, 2002 08:54 AM
More than $100,000 has gone towards the community of Cumborah to help them secure a permanent water supply.

With a population of 100 Cumborah has until now been relying on rainwater tanks and a number of shallow, unreliable bores for its water supply.

The $102,500 from the State Government has been granted to Walgett Shire Council to carry out the design and construction of the first stage of Cumborah's water supply scheme.

Cumborah Progress Association secretary Joan McNaughton, who has been fighting since May to get a more effective and secure water system in place, said she was very excited when she heard the news.

"I found out last week and it is just wonderful to know that through the help of the Department of Land and Water Conservation this has been able to finally happen."

But it was not all smooth sailing for Mrs McNaughton and her progress association.

"Initially we didn't receive any responses to our letters to various government bodies and relevant groups, but we have received a few now," she said.

Land and water conservation minister John Aquilina said the project would involve the construction of a permanent water supply bore and standpipe, with the second stage involving the construction of a reticulation system.
