Water payment on agenda at meeting

16 Jan, 2003 08:38 AM
A public meeting to discuss water payments once a bore is installed will be held in Cumborah on Monday.

The State Government has allocated $102,500 to tthe project, which is to be matched by Walgett Shire Council.

At its last meeting in December, council had not established payment options for installation and the use of the service, once water is supplied.

But Cumborah Progress Association water sub-committee spokesperson Joan McNaughton said council had supported the installation of the bore in principle and it would go ahead.

She said the progress association had also looked at allowing the water to be used by the surrounding mining communities of Grawin and Glengarry.

However, the bore would not be able to be extended to those areas because Cumborah was the only eligible place to receive the funding.

"We're on freehold land here (Cumborah), so we can get the bore, but some time later we'll have to look at piping it through to Grawin and Glengarry.

"But if we get too many miners who want to use the water for their puddling tanks, they'll ruin the bore system for us," she said.

Mrs McNaughton said the progress association now had the support of Aboriginal groups in the area, which she believed would help the cause.

"If we don't manage to get a water supply to our village during this drought, we'll never get it."

Mrs McNaughton said she didn't believe council's concerns of how they would be reimbursed $102,500 for the installation of the pipe was warranted, as council would have a number of years to regain the money.

"They (council) either need to rate us, which we don't object to, or get users to pay.

"I've already offered the council a number of payment solutions and if they decide not to go ahead with it, there must be some hidden agenda," she said.

Walgett Shire councillor Joan Treweeke who will be present at the meeting, said there was no doubt that people would have to pay for the water service.

However, she agreed the bore was necessary for the village.

"I feel that Cumborah will grow once OPA 4 (opal mining area) is opened up, because it is a huge area, which I think will attract more residents, so we need to provide Cumborah with a better water supply," she said.
