Fundraising efforts for Lana’s Warriors, a rugby league team that is being developed locally to participate in the 40th annual NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout, have been going full steam ahead.
Paula Walsh is the woman behind this project which is dedicated to the memory of her sister, Lana Walsh, who died in 1991 as a result of domestic violence.
Ms Walsh said she hoped the establishment of this team would help raise awareness of and promote the prevention of domestic violence.
During the last couple of weeks Ms Walsh, along with her brother Michael Walsh, Ellen Howlett, Dawn Towney, Debbie Boney and Trinette Simms, have been holding barbecues and 100 clubs at the Lightning Ridge Hotel Motel to raise desperately needed funds for the project.
So far they have managed to successfully raise more than $1000.
They also received a donation of $500 from the Lightning Ridge RSL Sub-Branch to help pay for the team’s accommodation during the knockout which is to be held in Woy Woy on the Central Coast during the October long weekend later this year.
In light of this Ms Walsh said the people behind the project would like to thank the RSL for their generous donation, which has enabled them to a put a deposit down for the team’s accommodation; all the people who have supported them by buying meals and tickets in the 100 clubs; Beau Seaton and Belinda Buckley from the Hotel Motel for letting them hold their fundraisers at the pub and Kayle Hobden, Melvyn Samuelsson and the ladies who run the joker draw for their ongoing support and promotion of Lana’s Warriors fundraisers.
The next barbecue fundraiser for Lana’s Warriors will be held at the Hotel Motel this Saturday from about 4.30pm.
It would be great to see as many people as possible down there supporting this worthy cause.
