Although rain caused the cancellation of some of the events scheduled to take place as part of the Walgett Community Festival last week, it was still a great opportunity for locals to celebrate their community and culture.
Lianne Tasker from the Walgett Shire Council said the festival had developed over the last three years in an attempt to build on the success of sporting events such as the Ricky Walford Shield and the Jenny Wright Shield.
Unfortunately these events were among those that had to be postponed due to the wet weather. The Walgett Charity Bushman’s Campdraft and Rodeo also had to be called off. Walgett was to host the 2010 Rodeo and Campdraft NSW Championships.
Those events that did go ahead included displays by the Walgett Historical Society and the Dharriwaa Elders Group; the Art, Craft and Curio Exhibition; the Chickpea Cooking Competition; and puppet making workshops.
The winners of the Art, Craft and Curio Exhibition were Jo Mihalic (individual exhibitor), Matika Foureur (primary school exhibitor and people’s choice) and the Walgett Quilter’s Group (group exhibitor).
The chickpea cooking competition was a new addition to this year’s program. The committee of community members, which organises the festival, said the competition was particularly successful and it hoped to build on it in future because Walgett was the largest chickpea producing area in Australia. The winner was Waveney Ascough.
