National Volunteers Week came to a close in the Ridge on Sunday as local volunteers celebrated a friends and families picnic day.
The picnic enabled all the volunteer organisations to come together and celebrate the outstanding contribution they make to the Lightning Ridge community.
The day started with a sausage sizzle at 11am and moved into fun and games in the afternoon with egg and spoon races, boomerang throwing and live music.
Event organiser Heather Landini said the event was the first of its type and would only be bigger next year.
"People have been coming up to me saying how much fun they have had today, so that is good," she said.
The day was also an opportunity for volunteer organisations to have people sign up and help out.
"While we didn't quite get the numbers we were looking for but it was great to see some people sign up," Mrs Landini said.
Members of Opal FM, Lightning Ridge Soroptimists, the Transcultural Community Council (TCC), the Flying Doctor Service, The Improvement and Beautification Committee (IBC), Yawarra Meamei women's group, and the Lightning Ridge Safehouse were all represented.
President of the IBC, Margaret Mansfield said the success of their volunteer projects was due to the great help of Best Employment and their work for the dole program.
"These initiatives have been instrumental in the development of major major improvements around Lightning Ridge, namely the work at the pony club, the Visitor Information Centre and the development of the multicultural gardens," she said.
