VET courses now available

17 Feb, 2005 08:17 AM
Students from Lightning Ridge Central School are now able to take up Vocational Educational and Training (VET) courses with the school being identified as geographically isolated.

Students in Years 9 and 10 can now take part in practical courses that were previously only delivered by TAFE.

Students who complete the TAFE-delivered VET courses will receive recognition on their School Certificate and a TAFE credential listing the competencies the students have demonstrated.

The courses in Years 9 and 10 are designed to give students a sample of VET subjects and the school hopes students will stay on and complete similar subjects in their senior studies.

School principal Peter Partridge said it was critical for students to get their School Certificates as many employers listed that as a basic level of study.

"We recently had a student return to school because they found they couldn't get a job without their School Certificate," he said.

There are incentives for students deciding to continue their study of VET courses in senior study.

Students who go on to complete VET courses as part of their HSC receive dual accreditation by the Board of Studies and the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF).

This gives students a competitive advantage in the job market, including the securing of apprenticeships.

Courses currently on offer to students include automotive studies at Walgett TAFE while beauty therapy, animal care and recreational fishing are delivered at the school through TAFE.

Hospitality is delivered by the school by Justine Reid who has the qualifications necessary to deliver the course.

Deputy principal Penelope Lehman said after the first week of VET courses the feedback from the students had been overwhelmingly positive.

The school is also offering electrotechnology on Thursday afternoons with 18 students already committed to begin the course.

The course will be delivered using video-conferencing technology through TAFE with the teachers based in Dubbo.

The course is set to start today.
