In true Aussie spirit, a large crowd attended Walgett Shire’s Australia Day celebrations.
The day commenced with more than 100 people enjoying the community breakfast which was followed by the official award presentations by guest Australia Day Ambassador, Olympic swimmer Sandra Morgan-Beavis.
In her Australia Day address Ms Morgan-Beavis encouraged the young people to follow their dreams.
“There will always be people trying to pull you down, but you need to keep pursuing those dreams”, she said.
Following the official part of the day, Ms Morgan-Beavis enjoyed a tour of the Lightning Ridge area.
Mayor Bill Murray said he was pleased with the support for the event from the local community.
“I would also like to thank the members of the Awards Committee including Marion Ward, Council’s general manager Don Ramsland, and councillors Jane Keir and Lawrence Walford for their efforts in judging the large number of nominations received and also the people who took the time to prepare nominations.
“I also congratulate not only the winners of the various awards but the many others who were nominated as well,” he concluded.
Next year’s awards will be held in Collarenebri.
