Tip changes help manage waste

09 May, 2002 10:15 AM
Three changes will take place at the Lightning Ridge Waste Management Centre soon, following Council acknowledgements that there were problems with the current tip system.

Councillor Bob Hewlett said the tip was only expected to have a life expectancy of one to two years left.

He said the current site, just past the cemetery, had been there for the past seven to eight years.

Shire mayor Peter Waterford said council was in the process of finding a new suitable site for the tip, but he assured it would not be an open-cut as was previously used.

He said an environmental impact study still had to be carried out before council could acquire the targeted land.

Cr Waterford said council had been looking for a new tip site during the past six months, and was considering setting it up either along the Castlereagh Highway or the old Walgett Road.

In addition council also announced it would be extending the tip trading hours to running every day during business hours.

Cr Hewlett said there was a big need to extending the existing operational hours, because at the moment many people were dumping their rubbish illegally or causing the yellow industrial bins along the outskirts of town to fill up rapidly.

The Waste Management Centre currently only operates from 8am to 11am each morning, and from 2pm to 5pm each afternoon, except for Thursday's when the tip is closed.

Along with the previous two changes to ensure a smoother running of waste disposal management in the Ridge will come the added fee to the dumping of tyres.

Council had proposed to impose between $3 to $10 per tyre depending on its size.

Cr Waterford said there were too many tyres being dumped, and the fee would help pay for the costs of shredding them.

But he said new tip operating hours would be the first change to be implemented.

"Our tip is currently manned by two full-time people, and once we provide staff tea room facilities, we'll be able to run the new hours," he said.
