Following the story regarding the conditions of the Lightning Ridge Rubbish Tip action has been taken to resolve ongoing concerns of flies, odours and waste being blown around the site.
Workers have been tackling the problem throughout the week undertaking extensive operations to bring garbage disposal up to environmental standards.
In the hope of resolving the growing problems several residents in the surrounding area contacted the Environment Protection Authority who then notified the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW).
A spokesperson for the department said “staff from the DECCW are currently working with the Walgett Shire Council to ensure works are undertaken promptly to improve odour and the storage of rubbish at the site”.
While steps are being taken to resolve the issue not everyone seems to be happy with this decision.
One resident, wanting to
water some plants, was confronted by a female worker
who verbally abused them in the belief they had complained about the sites distasteful
state.
The victim of this abuse
was brought to tears by the encounter but wished to
stress that “Jim who operates
the site is nothing less than
a gentlemen”, but remains shaken.
Director of Corporate Carole Medcalf of the Walgett Shire Council stated in response to this event the “Rubbish Tip is run on a contract with council and as such the operators are expected to behave in a reasonable fashion, but if it was a worker employed the the holder than it remained a police matter”.
The DECCW noted that will continue to liase with the Walgett Shire Council in managing the case.
