A suicide prevention seminar will be held in Lightning Ridge on Wednesday September 7 called 'Keeping the bush alive - a seminar on surviving tough times'.
Australia has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, every day we have an average of seven suicides and 210 attempted suicides.
Barwon group CWA vice-president Jill Roughley, who has been a driving force behind the Lightning Ridge seminar, met the Prime Minister recently when Mr Howard announced a Federal Government grant of $600,000 for LifeForce in recognition of the value of its suicide prevention initiatives.
Mrs Roughley said the seminar is not necessarily for a person on the verge of suicide.
"We want to educate people on what they can do to help someone they are concerned about," she said.
Mrs Roughley said it was about creating support networks for people.
"People should not be afraid to come, we will be having a barbecue after and it should be a relaxed atmosphere," she said.
The LifeForce seminar will be conducted at the Lightning Ridge Community Church in Morilla Street.
The barbecue begins at 6pm and the seminar will be from 7.30-9.30pm. For details contact Rev Rick Maude on 6829 0597 or Jill Roughley on 6828 7236.
