Sewing up a storm for kids with cancer

24 Sep, 2003 07:29 PM
Several women from throughout Lightning Ridge showed their support for kids with cancer last Saturday by participating in a quilt day.

Seven ladies came to the bowling club to lend a hand in sewing quilts for children with cancer.

Ten quilt tops were finished by the end of the day, which was a huge achievement according to organiser Robynne White, who was thrilled with the support shown by members of the community.

"It was wonderful. We had two ladies who are not quilters turn up to sew for us, and another lady who came up just to iron for us," she said.

Joanne Osborne, Lynne Schmidt, Debbie Dwyer, Gail Cremanesi, Ann Manley and Maude all came along to help out.

Mrs White said the idea to have a quilting day came from her penfriend in Tamworth.

"My penfriend makes quilts for the hospital, and we had always talked about doing something, and one day she got this idea of getting everyone together and having a big weekend of sewing for these kids," she said.

"She wanted us to all go over there, but because of the expense we decided to have a little one here, in support of her bigger one over there."

Once finished the quilts are sent to the John Hunter hospital in Newcastle and the Westmead Children's Hospital in Sydney.

Mrs White said the reaction of the children who received the quilts was amazing.

"The parents usually write a letter back, and for kids with ongoing treatment they become security blankets," she said.

Mrs White said there is enough donated material left for there to be another quilting day in the future.
