Service honours our war heroes

19 Nov, 2004 08:28 AM
The Lightning Ridge community honoured its war veterans last week by marking Remembrance Day with a small ceremony at Lions Park.

Around 40 people attended the service which was held at 11am on November 11, 86 years after the signing of the armistice to end World War I.

Bill Trevethan and Morrie Bowls officiated the service, playing the Last Post and pausing for a minutes silence to remember the dead.

"The armistice was signed in the hope all war would end. Unfortunately it's still going on," Mr Trevethan said.

Ex-army officer Joe Seears raised the flag during the Reveille and the crowd sang the national anthem to finish the service.

Mr Trevethan also presented framed medallions to students from Lightning Ridge Central School to mark the anniversary.

The NSW president of the Returned and Services league Don Rowe said Remembrance Day was the universal day to acknowledge all those men, women and children of all nationalities, ethnic origins and religious beliefs who have lost their lives in conflict.

"Remembrance Day, November 11 is a day of peace. It's also a day on which we pay tribute to those who have suffered, particularly those who have come home from serving their nation with physical or mental scars."
