RTA pledges to upgrade road signage

30 Jun, 2005 09:49 AM
The Roads and Traffic Authority will continue to upgrade signage along the Castlereagh Highway, providing a welcome boost to the district's tourism industry.

Lightning Ridge Tourist Association (LRTA) president John Murray said inadequate signage from Dubbo to the Ridge had been a long-running problem.

"Further works are planned for the 2005-2006 financial year to upgrade kilometre posts, which give the distance to upcoming destinations, to mention Lightning Ridge and Hebel," an RTA spokesman said.

Mr Murray said the LRTA had been lobbying the RTA for better signage.

"You have a situation where the signs are displaying Angledool, and when the Ridge does appear on a sign it is in brackets," he said.

The RTA said since Angledool had diminished in size and Lightning Ridge had grown, the kilometre signs needed to be replaced.

"Also, signage at the Castlereagh-Kamilaroi highways intersection and the Castlereagh-Gwydir highways intersection will be upgraded," the spokesman said.

Mr Murray said he was also concerned about the signage at Gilgandra, or the lack of it, when coming from Dubbo.

"When you come through Gilgandra all the signs point toward the Newell Highway without mention of the Castlereagh," he said.

However the RTA would not comment on this specific area, but pointed to the amount spent on upgrading signage in the last financial year.

"More than $30,000 was spent upgrading the signage on the Castlereagh Highway this financial year, most incorporating Lightning Ridge," the RTA spokesman said.

He said signs had only recently been installed at the Castlereagh Highway and Bill O'Brien Way intersection to stop travellers missing the turn off.

Mr Murray said while these signs were a good step in the right direction, more needed to be done.

"Getting those signs at the intersection was great, but that took eight years of lobbying by Margaret Mansfield.

"There is an ongoing need for a signage upgrade," he said.
