Rotary celebrates its achievements

28 Oct, 2004 08:32 AM
Lightning Ridge Rotary Club held its seventh anniversary dinner on Monday with the Rotary District Governor in attendance.

The night was a celebration of Rotary's achievements during the past 12 months and the seven preceding years of operation.

Special guests were Rotary District Governor Harry Durey, assistant district governor Michael Carrigan and Lightning Ridge Rotary president Danielle Osborne.

Mr Durey spoke about the origins of Rotary and the achievements of Rotary worldwide and locally.

"In a way Lightning Ridge epitomises the dreams of Harris (founder) in providing companionship, fellowship and the desire the serve your community."

The night also paid tribute to local president Danielle Osborne, as under her leadership membership in Rotary has doubled.

Local Rotary accomplishments this year have included fund raising events such as running the bar at the horse races and rodeo, serving breakfast for the Postie Bike Challenge and assisting the Westpac Helicopter Rescue team.

They also ran a charity auction to raise money for Camp Quality, distributed $400 worth of books to the local preschool and Little Diggers, sponsored the school's Breakfast Club and donated funds to the Royal Flying Doctors Service.

Most recently Rotary has supported the Blue Light disco and has run a mental health awareness forum.

All Rotarians encouraged everyone in Lightning Ridge to become a member of Rotary and help serve the community

The next Rotary event is a bowls day and 60s dance night to be held on November 20.
