The annual Ugly Man Competition was one of the highlights of the Grawin Show last Sunday.
It is a long-running tradition that sees local residents battle it out for the honour of being voted the ugliest man on the Grawin opal fields.
This year Ron Butcher snared the title and John Berkery was named the runner-up.
They were up against some tough competition in the form of Lenny Butts and Lynn Bartleson who won the competition in 2009 and 2008 respectively.
Among the other contestants were Dale Everingham, Tony Cummings, Ron Turner, Paddy Ellis, Grant Trumper, Chris Burden, Carl Donnelly, Tracy Wolens, Ted Mayes and Terry the piano man.
The other attractions at the show included photography, cooking, preserves, home-grown produce, handicrafts and home brew competitions.
Rosemary Maddox from Cumborah won the Grand Champion Exhibit with her box of luscious-looking, home-grown vegetables.
Other honourable mentions must be made of Kerry Flint, who claimed first place in the black and white photograph and photograph of a plant or tree, pickles, and handmade bag categories; Margaret Herbert, who took home first place honours in the photograph of an opal, jam, scone and open crotchet categories; Ted Mayes, who won first prize in the categories for a bunch of mixed herbs and three citrus fruit; Jenny Head, who was victorious in the fruit cake and open sewing categories; and lastly, Zac Webb, who won the open cake and open drawing categories.
Another honourable, or perhaps dishonourable, mention must be made of Jack and Leslie, who took on the difficult task of judging the cooking competition. Apparently, they needed to eat almost half of Di Ashcroft’s chocolate cake before they could determine whether it was the winner. It was the only one entered in its category.
Relieving secretary of show society Paul Rose said although the qualities of the entries were very good the numbers were down a bit on last year because people had left the field as a result of the opal running out and their not being allowed to open up new fields.
