Rising costs force airport refuelling service to close

25 Jun, 2004 08:14 PM
Lowes Petroleum is removing its refuelling services from Lightning Ridge Aerodrome after operating costs were deemed too expensive to continue business.

From the end of the month aeroplanes will be unable to refuel at the airport in less than 200 litre quantities.

Two hundred litre AVGAS drums would be available for purchase at the Lowes Depot at the Mobil Service Station, with a hand pump also available for use.

General manager for Lowes Petroleum Bernie Morris said it was unfortunate the service would have to end but that it was no longer viable for the company to provide the service.

He said the shut-down was due to the rising costs of insurance and the decrease in the volume of fuel purchased at the aerodrome.

"We're disappointed we've had to go this way.

"We've had really good customers, but without the volume and rising costs, it's not viable to do business there."

Lowes were set to introduce a call out fee for their pump operators of $50 during business hours and $100 after hours and on weekends, but Mr Morris said this was the wrong thing to do for their customers, and that it was just a quick fix for a long term problem.

He said for business to continue the increase in the cost of the product would have been exorbitant.

The refuelling service will finish on June 30.
