 RIDGE REVEALS CHARM

RIDGE REVEALS CHARM

24 Mar, 2005 08:41 AM
Lightning Ridge will once again show off its unique character as many flock into town to enjoy the myriad activities that have come to represent Easter in the Ridge.

In its 29th year the Great Goat Race has become steeped in tradition and fond memories.

Great Goat Race Committee member Maxine O'Brien said 2005 was the first year the committee had run as a subcommittee under the Lightning Ridge Tourist Association.

"Opal Street is going to be closed from Harlequin Street and this should provide more of a festive type of environment," she said.

Ms O'Brien said the goats had been collected and everything was set to go for what will once again be a great weekend in the Ridge.

The Great Goat Race registration begin at 7:30am on Saturday with the great race set to start at 9am.

The Battle of the Buskers will start at 10am with buskers on Opal and Morilla streets.

Organiser Viki Murray said the committee was still looking for more street stalls with an emphasis on hand-made or grown products to add to the nine stalls so far.

"As part of the Battle of the Buskers we have a salsa band from Brisbane coming so that should be interesting," she said.

Mrs Murray said there were seven buskers coming from out of town and two from Lightning Ridge.

"We have three playing horns, one on bagpipes, two saxophone players, one salsa band, a guitarist, and a person doing vocals and guitar," she said.

Mrs Murray said the committee was still looking for volunteers to help with the goat handling and other important activities throughout the day.

She also reminded audiences to bring a chair for the final at Nobbies on Saturday night.

The Black Opal Rodeo is also set to build on its success during the past few years with a good increase in nominations.

Black Opal Rodeo Association president Aub Tribe said in the past the rodeo had had a steady increase in entries but this year there had been a large increase.

Mr Tribe said organisers had been run off their feet but it was all coming together for the event.

"I'm very excited, this year we have 278 competitors," he said.

The horse races will have a similar number of nominations to last year with a total of $19,500 in prize money up for grabs.

The first race starts at about 1:50pm to fit in with races in the metropolitan centres.

There will be prizes for best dressed and bookmakers and TAB facilities will be available.
