Ridge remembers Vietnam veterans

19 Aug, 2004 12:43 PM
Lightning Ridge marked Vietnam Veterans Day yesterday with a small ceremony at the Returned Services League Club sub-branch.

Around 30 people attended the service to remember all those who died during the Vietnam War.

Gil Mack ran the service and spoke about the sacrifice young Australian men made for their country.

"We commemorate those who gave the sacrifices in the Vietnam conflict. They call it a conflict, not a war, but I don't know what the difference is, you still get shot in a conflict as in a war."

Vietnam Veterans Day also coincided with the 38th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

"No doubt this was a very famous battle, there were many battles fought in Vietnam...that lasted longer. But this battle showed how conscripts, when they came under fire and were ambushed, were able to hold their ranks, and get what we called a victory."

The battle lasted for three hours and it showed what newly arrived Australians could do.

"When the count was over it was recorded that the enemy suffered 245 killed, Australians suffered 17 killed and 26 wounded.

"On this day we remember those who served in the army, navy and air force, those that lost their lives, those who came home suffering physical and mental wounds. We also remember the families who had to put up with this torment. God help them, they were only 19."

Sister Catherine said a prayer and Glad Collins read a poem she had written about the Vietnam conflict.
