Ridge motor registry opens

28 Oct, 2004 08:30 AM
Lightning Ridge's new motor registry opened this week under the operation of the Roads and Traffic Authority.

The service was previously managed by the Walgett Shire Council, but earlier in the year the council asked the RTA to take over operations of the service.

Parliamentary secretary for roads Tony Stewart said the takeover by the RTA would result in a higher level of service for the Lightning Ridge community.

"Walgett council advised the RTA earlier this year that it would like to withdraw from providing agency services on behalf of the RTA at Lightning Ridge and Walgett," he said.

"Customers will receive increased service with the office undergoing an upgrade of counter and computer facilities, enabling up to three staff to attend customers simultaneously.

The RTA will provide a full provision of registry services and three RTA customer service staff.

The registry will be open from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Wednesday and closed for a staff lunch break between 12pm and 12.30pm.

"Although this is less than the current opening hours, the increased number of staff during each day will mean improved consistency and reliability of service for customers," Mr Stewart said.

7he number of driver testing days will also be increased from one day each fortnight to one day each week.

Additionally, staff at the Lightning Ridge registry will be trained to provide driving testing rather than having driver testing staff visit from another location.

Walgett council has also indicated it will continue to provide RTA services at Walgett until late November, when the RTA plans to open a new registry in Walgett.

"From late November, Walgett Motor Registry will also be open 9am to 3pm, Thursday and Friday and with a half hour lunch break between 12pm and 112.30pm," he said.

"Communities such as Walgett and Lightning Ridge do not usually have individual motor registry facilities due to population and transaction volume being too low. In a new initiative, both communities will have motor registry services with local staff members sharing their time between each location."
