Lightning Ridge residents have again voiced their concerns about the amount of dust streaming into their homes in residential areas. Residents in Potch Street say the dust is a health issue and are concerned for the health of their children. "The dust is unbelievable, inside and outside the house, especially after one of our frequent dry spells," Liz Eddy said. Ms Eddy said she believed a large amount of the dust contained opal dirt, which could be harmful to the respiratory system. "I believe a fair amount of opal dirt is contained in the road surface. The actual course of the road enables drivers to travel fast, thus increasing the dirt," she said. Ms Eddy said a lot of vehicles used the road as there were many camps in the area. "At one stage, my late partner was actually watering the road himself, several times a day, as the shire was unable to assist us," she said. Far West Area Health Service public health director Bill Balding said as a general rule inhaling large quantities of dust can be very harmful. "I cannot comment on opal dirt, but as far as dust goes, generated at a work site or by a road, it can be very detrimental to your health," he said. Walgett Shire general manager Stephen McLean said he would look into the matter and would investigate where council's responsibility started and ended.
