Push to establish early intervention centre

28 May, 2003 05:51 PM
Hi all, last week we visited the fire station and State Emergency Service (SES).

Meeting the firefighters and SES members, and seeing the equipment and clothing they use helped the children gain more understanding about what an important job these people have keeping us safe and protecting us.

Max at the SES demonstrated how a person was rescued from a mine after a mining accident.

Thanks for showing us around and thanks to Cheryl and Max for the treats you gave the kids.

We revised our fire safety before the visit to the station.

The children have been learning about space.

We have the night sky hanging from our ceiling and children's night sky pictures displayed.

We are learning more about Earth's landscapes such as rainforests, deserts, snow and oceans this week.

The children have brought in some great show and tell including huge caterpillars, and a talking dragon.

Sarah also showed the children butterflies hatching out of a whole branch full of chrysalises.

Thanks Tracey for making the wonderful alphabet letters book for us, it's a great resource, which we will use a lot, so thanks very much.

Outcomes from our early intervention centre meeting (parents and a wide range of service providers attended the meeting on Tuesday last week at the Central School) included:.

o Put out a petition for community members to voice their support to establish an early intervention community centre and what specific needs they see for our community that the centre could address.

o Parents of children with needs are to write a letter describing their needs and the difficulties they face at the moment.

o Service providers to write letters supporting the proposal, stating specific needs and providing data to support this (client numbers and specifics).

Please drop in petitions and letters to Little Diggers at 24 Kaolin Street or send to PO Box 1105.

Alternatively ring Sarah Chamberlain on 6829 2929 for more information.

A follow-up meeting is to be held at the Accident and Emergency Centre on Wednesday July 27.

This will be to collate our data, identify our community's specific needs and approach various bodies for funding, to employ a co-ordinator for our early intervention community centre.

A committee will be formed to apply for various funding available.

Together we will be able to achieve great results.
