Project focusing on world's poor vision

18 Apr, 2002 11:31 AM
Soroptomists is calling for people with unwanted or unused spectacles to hand them in, as part of a new project which focuses on people in third world countries.

Assistant secretary Val Tarlton, who initiated the project for the Ridge, said the project involved collecting old and unwanted spectacles to be used by impoverished people in third world countries.

"People who think they can help out can drop their spectacles in at White's Pharmacy or Andrews Meat Service," she said.

The project was originally set up by the late Fred Hollows, who did a lot of work in eye research in north western NSW, especially at Bourke.

"The project will be part of an ongoing program in the Ridge with Foresight, a nationally-based company, which forwards the spectacles overseas to the places where they are needed," Ms Tarlton said.

Soroptomists have already collected a handful of glasses in the Ridge and hope the community will support the project.
