Dog owners in Lightning Ridge are being cautioned by police to keep their dogs restrained after a series of dog fights in town.
A police spokesman said owners should be reminded of their responsibilities under the Animals Companion Act.
"Owners are being advised to keep their dogs restrained," the spokesman said.
Some Lightning Ridge residents are concerned after a dog fight on Monday in Harlequin Street, when it is alleged a woman was walking her dog when it was attacked by another dog.
Police said the woman was knocked to the ground and was taken to Lightning Ridge Hospital.
Hospital staff said the woman received no physical injuries and was discharged the same day, suffering shock from the incident.
Walgett Shire ranger Greg Lyons said residents needed to be aware of what was going on.
"With dogs roaming the town things are going to happen," he said.
Another incident occurred on June 8 when police allege four unrestrained dogs set upon another dog outside the Diggers Rest in Opal Street.
Police said the alleged victim had two dogs on a lead when it was attacked by the other dogs.
"The owners tried to pull the dogs apart and as a result the victim's dog received an injury, losing part of its ear," a police spokesman said.
Police said the owner of the unrestrained dogs received a bite while trying to pull the dogs apart.
Police also received complaints from residents in Nettleton Drive last week in relation to dogs running around in the street.
According to a police spokesman the matter was referred to the ranger who picked the dogs up as a result of the complaint.
Police said owners should be restraining their dogs and be aware of the consequences if they failed to do so.
