The Lightning Ridge Neighbourhood Centre is developing a drop in centre for the town's youth to offer people aged between 14 to 17 a place to go after school and during the holidays.
"We are happy to say funds have been given to us from both the Walgett shire in a grant through the Community Assistance Scheme and the Centrelink Cluster so that we can purchase a pool table and a table tennis top and accessories," project co-ordinator Heather Landini said.
"Centrelink will be ongoing sponsors for the consumables," she said.
Ms Landini said the centre was being developed by volunteers George McCormick and his friends and she hoped with input from the youth themselves.
"This is a community venture and we at the Neighbourhood Centre are always on the lookout for helpers and volunteers," she said.
Ms Landini said it would be good if some of the area's youth could put together a mural on one of the walls.
"It's great we now have the volunteers to continue on with the project because I was getting worried for a little while," she said.
Ms Landini said the centre would be run by volunteers and the youth would have an adult present at all times.
"This is a safety requirement and of course these volunteers will have had a working with children check," she said.
Ms Landini said all donations to the centre were greatly appreciated and would like to thank the local painter, the Bowling Club, Jed the plumber, volunteer Garry and others who have their community at heart.
"We still need a few things so if you are throwing out anything ask me first if I need it for the Youth Centre part of the Neighbourhood Centre. (pool cues, TT nets, bats, computer, games, radio, cd player, cds)."
