New housing a great teacher incentive

New housing a great teacher incentive

05 Mar, 2010 02:00 PM
The young children of Lightning Ridge will benefit from a recent announcement after the Teacher Housing Authority revealed that the town was set to receive a new house and three units at the cost of $1.3 million to help retain staff at the local central school.

The location for the new housing will be on the corner of Halley’s Comet and Fantasia streets. The two blocks have been purchased from the Walgett Shire Council for the purpose of erecting a four-bedroom house and two one bedroom flats and another two bedroom flat.

The units will be furnished by the authority, but the house will be filled by the new resident.

The new developments will supplement the 38 property available to local teachers. This includes 14 houses and 24 units.

The Teacher Housing Authority noted that the majority of teachers live in these homes compared to others regions across the State and to keep them attracted to the area they are provided with subsidised rent for this purpose.

Lightning Ridge Central School principal Chris Tome is thrilled with the proposal for two new buildings.

“Housing is an important incentive for teachers to come to remote areas, so the decision by the Teacher Housing Authority to construct

more accommodation for teachers is very welcome,” Mr Tome said.

“Also, of course, is the work that such a project will provide for members of the local community.

“It is a vote of confidence in the future of the Lightning Ridge Central School”.

Member for Barwon Kevin Humphries said the latest figures released were encouraging, with Barwon representing 37 per cent of the housing portfolio.

“Teacher housing stocks is a big issue across the electorate and I am very pleased to see progress being made with a total $3.5 million spent recently in Barwon,” Mr Humphries said.

“Good teacher housing provides potential education staff added incentive to work in this wonderful part of the world and I welcome any extra funding and projects when it comes to keeping our stock in plentiful and good condition.

Goodooga has also recently had a transportable house constructed to the value of $340,000 with an additional 12 residences refurbished worth $390,000.

Walgett hasn’t missed out on the development with the conversion of a carport into a garage for extra security.
