Last week, Minister for Roads David Borger announced the NSW Government was providing an extra $477,000 in funding for the Walgett Shire to repair roads damaged by the floods earlier this year.
This is in addition to the $1.7million announced previously.
Walgett Shire general manager Don Ramsland said the extra funding would mean that the shire is now able to carry out the necessary repairs to those roads damaged by the floods without having to use council funds, which means more money in the ratepayers’ pockets.
Of the funding, $122,000 was allocated to repair regional roads, including approximately $50,000 for the Collarenebri to Lightning Ridge Road, $44,000 for the Collarenebri to Mungindi Road and $27,000 for emergency works.
The Walgett Shire Council contributed an extra $29,000 for the repair of local roads, bringing the total apportionment up to roughly $380,000.
Of that, about $35,000 was allocated to repairs on the Koomalah Road, $28,000 for the Angledool Road, $15,000 from the Cambo Road, $15,000 from the Boorah Road, $13,000 for the Burren Baa Road, $12,000 for Springs Road, $6000 for Fabian’s Road, $3000 for Banoway Crossing Road and $27,000 for emergency works.
The decision on which roads were to be repaired was based on an assessment of the damage carried out by the Walgett Shire Council in conjunction with the RTA. Mr Ramsland said that this process had been taking place during the last couple of months.
Mr Ramsland said work had already started to return the roads to their pre-flood state of repair, but the ongoing rain had been making it difficult. Despite this, Mr Ramsland said the work should be completed by the end of September.
