Mural will tell tales of support group members

28 Jul, 2005 09:03 AM
The Lightning Ridge women's support group is well on the way to completing a mural to tell their stories through art.

The women's support group has been running for more than a year and is a joint project under the Transcultural Community Council and the Yawarra Meamei women's group.

Each member of the group has been completing their own painting on canvas with the final mural to be a collection of each individual woman's story.

"It will all come together as one big piece of art, called 'her story', as opposed to his story," support group member Ollie Chiu said.

The group has received funding from Walgett shire and Outback Arts for materials to complete the project, which helps bring together women from the community with great multicultural diversity.

"We owe great thanks to artists Eve Brown and Babette Magnusson who helped us by giving us workshops and going through the basic concepts with us," support group member Gygorgi Nyers said.

The support group runs on Tuesdays from 10 to 12pm, with various community-orientated projects planned for the near future.

"It is a really multicultural exercise, we have a great mix of the community here and that is reflected through the art work," Mrs Chiu said.
