Mobile coverage for residents of Grawin

17 Dec, 2003 06:01 PM
Representatives from Telstra CountryWide, Walgett Shire Council and Lightning Ridge attended the launch of a new CDMA tower in Grawin last Monday.

Telstra CountryWide area general manager for the North West NSW region, Ian Peters, and Walgett Shire Council mayor Peter Waterford attended the day at Mr Waterford's opal mine.

Mr Peters said the launch was special because it was a record number of towers in the region.

"Today is fairly momentous for me, because this is the 50th tower we've put up in North West in NSW. Fifty new towers since Telstra CountryWide was put together to look after the country part of Australia. It means a fair bit to us," he said.

"I understand the challenges of trying to get things like mobile coverage into places, and getting things like broadband into places like Lightning Ridge."

Mr Peters said he hoped broadband would be available in the Ridge by March next year.

Mr Waterford said he was very pleased at the work Telstra had done in the bush to increase services.

"They've done a remarkable job... it's certainly made it great for Walgett shire," he said.

"You've got a group of people out here, probably 700 to 800 people living here at any one time, but all the tourists coming out here as well. It's a vast area in the Grawin, Glengarry and Sheepyard that are going to be using this facility all the time. I'm glad we pulled it off."

Local businesses, residents and visitors will all be affected by the new mobile phone coverage following the official commissioning of the digital CDMA base station at Grawin and Springvale.

Telstra CountryWide has spent $2 million on mobile phone towers in the Walgett shire.
