While at the Visitor Information Centre opening last Thursday, deputy prime minister and federal Gwydir MP John Anderson presented Centenary of Federation Medals to recipients from Lightning Ridge, Collarenebri and Rowena.
Mr Anderson said the Centenary Medal was created to recognise the achievements of a cross-section of the community, at the time of the Centenary of Federation and to prepare for the challenges of the new century by honouring people who had contributed to the community or government.
Mr Anderson said everyone who had received the award had selflessly and without regard for personal recognition served their community for lengthy periods, in most cases voluntarily.
"By recognising this remarkable group of people, the local community can remind itself of the values that are important to society, and be inspired by their example."
The recipients for Lightning Ridge included Elizabeth Bevan - for service to community development; William Jeffries - for service to Australian society and to the Murdi Paaki Regional Council; Olwyn Johnston - for service to health as the first endorsed nurse practitioner in Australia; David Lane - for service to the community through the Lightning Ridge State Emergency Service unit; and Bruce Varley - for service to the Maitland community as State Emergency Service controller.
"I congratulate all recipients of the Centenary Medal and thank them for their generosity, community spirit and enthusiasm in shaping our community over the years," Mr Anderson said.
