Locusts to hatch soon

26 Aug, 2004 10:44 AM
The State Government has reminded landholders to be on the lookout for locusts, following reports of isolated hatchings near Lightning Ridge and areas north of Narrabri.

"After reports from a few landholders, the Australian Plague Locust Commission (APLC) surveyed the area and has seen only light hatchings in a few spots," NSW primary industries minister Ian Macdonald said.

"Additional locust hatchings will gradually begin in other areas of the State in the coming weeks."

Parts of the central west should see hatchings in mid-to-late September, while hatchings in the Riverina are expected in early October.

The response teams stand ready to attack the locusts with an unprecedented amount of resources.

This includes enough chemical now on hand or on order to treat 410,000 hectares.

Ground control chemicals are being distributed to Rural Lands Protection Boards (RLPBs) in key areas of the State ahead of those expected hatchings.

Landholders are urged to constantly be on the look-out for signs of locusts.

If they spot egg beds or see hatchings, they should call their RLPB immediately.

Representatives from the NSW Farmers Association have been involved every step of the way in helping to develop the spring control campaign.

They have also helped determine the current level of control chemical and have signed-off on plans that enable us to secure more supplies throughout the effort.

"Winning the war against the locusts requires a team effort, and we'll continue to work closely with NSW Farmers Association, the RLPBs and the APLC to assess and enhance response strategies as needed," Mr Macdonald said.

"Landholders are being updated on the spring plan through a series of information sessions across the State, which are co-ordinated with the help of the NSW Farmers Association and the RLPBs.

"So far, approximately 1300 people have attended 20 landholder information sessions.

More than 30 additional sessions will be held through to September."
