Local teachers stop work for better wages

30 Jul, 2003 05:17 PM
More than 35 teachers from Lightning Ridge and Goodooga took part in a stop-work meeting on Tuesday morning to discuss the proposed salaries offer and future directions of industrial action, following the Government's wage increase for next year.

NSW Teachers Federation representative Andrew Nordstrom said teachers were worried about the way the Government was mortgaging the future.

He said of specific concern was the teacher shortages experienced in country areas.

"We need to fill positions out here first because we will feel the impact of this first as it impacts on the children and their future."

While much talk centred around the salary dispute, the issue of provision for teachers was also raised."

Following the meeting Mr Nordstrom said there was a unanimous vote that teachers under the Walgett Teachers' Association adopt the NSW Teachers' Federation recommendation, which included calling on the Government to give salary justice to teachers.

"By increasing our wages and bringing them in line with what it should be the teacher shortage problem will be significantly relieved."

He said the recommendation also supported further industrial action by lobbying politicians and holding further stop-work meetings if necessary.

Mr Nordstrom said the situation had got to a point where salaries and conditions of teachers had been neglected for so long.

"It is not just teachers who are being neglected now but students too."

Mr Nordstrom said teachers were concerned about the future direction of the Department of Education.
