Lightning gallery provides boost to tourism in Ridge

11 Jun, 2009 01:39 PM
Tourism in Lightning Ridge has been given a boost, with one more attraction added to the list of places to visit in the area.

Ridge Lightning Gallery is the creation of locals Russell Gawthorpe and Shaun Galman, and showcases breath-taking photography of lightning as it has occurred around the town over the past years.

Mr Gawthorpe, who has lived in Lightning Ridge since the age of five, has been taking photographs for five years.

Although not quite sure

what got him interested in photography, Mr Gawthorpe first became interested in lightning after experimenting, taking a photo out of the bathroom window.

“I hope to bring something new and unique to Lightning Ridge, as businesses in the town start to move away from opals,” Mr Gawthorpe said.

Photos exhibited in the gallery date back to summer of 2005, but more recently a range of photos were taken by the two men over the summer of 2008/2009.

Visitors are invited to come and see how the atmosphere of local icons, such as the bowling club and courthouse, are changed by the presence of lightning.

The gallery is located on 45 Gem Street, and is open every day from 10am-5.30pm.

Excellent news. Anything that boosts tourism to The Ridge gets my vote. I came all the way from Spain to see the place. Well - actually, I was staying at my brother's house in Melbourne, but was determined to see the birthplace of black opals whilst I was there, even though it involved a whole day travelling up there and a whole day travelling back to Melbourne. It was totally worth it. I had a marvellous two days, exploring the mines, going on safari in the outback and seeing the local sights such as Amigo's castle and the astronomy building and the bottle house; relaxing by the pool at Lightning Ridge Hotel Motel, and by the Artesian bore baths, catching a tan and relaxing. Pure mineral water comes out of the taps, it's like a spa holiday with the added bonus of shops galore selling beautiful black opal jewellery. Just seeing black opals now makes me go weak-kneed. Anyone out there who hasn't been to Lightning Ridge, get on the road and find it. It's a great little outback retreat and I loved it. A little corner of paradise for this work-weary twenty-something English girl from Spain.
