Kids colour in for a cause

25 Jun, 2003 05:17 PM
Sixty children from Lightning Ridge participated in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service colouring-in competition held during awareness week last week.

The local Westpac Bank branch ran the competition in two categories for kids aged five to eight years old and for those aged nine to 12.

Local artist John Murray judged the works on Monday afternoon, and the winners Nicholas Casement and Natalie Huckel were presented with their prizes at a school assembly on Tuesday morning.

Both children received a $20 bank deposit.

Westpac Bank staff member Debbie Ward said they were happy with the number of school students who got involved despite the short time to complete the entries.

"We believe if we ran the competition for a longer time instead of just a week we would have had more kids participating, but we wanted to keep it within the awareness week timeframe."

Ms Ward said the local branch initiated the competition.

"We saw it as a good opportunity to get out into the community and make people aware of the helicopter service.

"It is Westpac's commitment to be community involved in the best way that we can.

"Our closest helicopter base is in Tamworth, and unlike the air ambulance people don't get charged when the service is called out."

She said Westpac mainly funded the service but portions had come from the community.

Six merit awards in each age category were also awarded to other children at the assembly, who had entered the competition.

All entries will be on display at the Westpac Bank until the end of the week.
