Insurance charge puts RFDS stalls in doubt

22 Sep, 2005 09:28 AM
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Trash and Treasure market has come under pressure from the Walgett Shire to take out insurance or risk being shut down "It's finally caught up with us," RFDS sub-branch secretary Kath Simpson said. According to Ms Simpson all stallholders will need to have a policy. "I had a quote from one company this week, which said it would cost $245 per stall; the stallholders just can't afford that," she said. Ms Simpson said the Walgett Shire Council has been trying to help out the market by finding the best price for the insurance costs. Ms Simpson could not guarantee the market would not be shut down. "It won't be shut down this week, but beyond that I do not know," she said. Ms Simpson said the Trash and Treasure Market had a real value to the community in terms of tourism. "It is also a great place for people to come together and meet, it is an area where people tend to socialize, I find that with the stallholders as well," she said. Ms Simpson said it would be a great loss to the community if the Trash and Treasure Market was shut down. "We have people on pensions running the stalls; they just can't afford to pay it," she said. "It (the insurance premium) is more than you make in a year, I know it's more than I have made." Ms Simpson said the RFDS already pays $100 for the rental of the Lions Park, which is on council-owned land. "We have between 20 or 30 stalls with the hospital auxiliary operating on the first Sunday of every month and the RFDS operates on the third Sunday, so in all we have a lot of people involved," she said. Walgett Shire Council general manager Stephen McLean said it was too early to tell if the Trash and Treasure Market would be in any trouble: "We are currently looking at the situation, but at the moment there is no need to make a big deal out of it."
