Information session for war widows

18 Jun, 2003 05:28 PM
Legacy's Mudgee/North West branch, which oversees the Lightning Ridge area visited last Thursday for the second meeting this year, bringing with them president Richard Holmes.

The luncheon meeting at the Lightning Ridge District Bowling Club was to inform and remind Legacy's eight local members of their entitlements and benefits.

President Richard Holmes said at the meeting Legacy staff explained to the war veteran widows what their medical, security and government entitlements were, and travel concessions, as well as outlining Legacy run holiday opportunities.

He said it was also a necessity that widows ensured their wills were up to date.

Mr Holmes said the meeting last week was similar to the previous one, to reinforce and remind widows what services Legacy provided.

"We are now trying to organise Lightning Ridge members to hold regular get-togethers and stay in touch with a monthly meeting or something.

"We know there are probably many more widows out in the surrounding area that we are not aware of, and we're sure they could probably benefit from Legacy's services."

Mr Holmes said he felt Legacy provided an important service to war widows because the organisation was able to provide more personalised assistance to the women than mainstream government departments were able to.

He said any war veteran widows who were not registered with Legacy and wished to do so can contact local Legatee Rebel Black at the Visitor Information Centre on 6829 1670.
