This is the Health Service's new information noticeboard to keep the residents of Lightning Ridge informed of what services are available, staff changes, and a general up-to-date on what's happening that may be of interest to you within the realms of health.
Watch the notice board during this school term for another 'exploring together' program which is planned for week one to 10 in second term.
This is a well researched and highly successful, free 10 week program for parents and children aged six to 12, where children are experiencing difficulties of aggression or withdrawn behaviour.
Teaching and health staff will jointly run this program and children can be referred by any agency, including parents themselves. It's a great way for children to improve social skills and a terrific support for parents (don't we all need that!).
On March 6, International Women's Day will be celebrated in Lightning Ridge with a movie and pampering day at the Bowling Club, organised by a variety of community groups (further ideas and help are always welcome).
There will be three separate sessions during the day to suit your schedule and whispers are, there will be sample bags for those attending with some very exciting goodies included. If you wish to speak about this event, contact Bec Christy at the Health Service.
Child health services have now resumed after the holiday break.
If you have child attending school who has not yet been given their preschool booster, please don't delay in having this attended to, either at the GP or here at the Health Service.
Your child must have an immunisation certificate to take to school, whether they have completed their immunisations or not. Drop in for immunisation on Monday mornings between 9am and 1pm, or phone 6829 1022 for a time that suits.
Other immunisation news:
Eighteen to 30 year olds are encouraged to come along for a free measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) immunisation to protect themselves as well as the children in the community.
People in this age group have never had a booster.
Children 10 to 13 years are eligible for hepatitis B immunisation if they did not receive this as a baby.
The child health nurse will offer this through the school each year.
We have had a prolonged and intense outbreak of chicken pox during past months.
Vaccine to prevent chicken pox (and shingles) is now available at a cost from your doctor.
Appointments can be made with our diabetes educator, Zoe Rose, for anything to do with diabetes.
We are running a series of diabetes education groups, the first is on February 27 at 10am at the Health Service, come and join us, meet other diabetics and have a chat. The dietitian's first visit for the year is on March 7, contact the office for an appointment.
Finally, but none the less important note, next week is the first National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Week.
This disease is often not detected until it is well advanced, yet early detection is vital to successful treatment.
Some women believe that a pap smear will detect ovarian cancer, but this is not the case.
The best way to find ovarian cancer early is to seek medical advice, if unexplained pelvic and abdominal symptoms persist. A simple pelvic examination can help reveal abnormalities of the ovary.
