Twenty-two young people attended the Walgett Shire Youth Council AGM on Thursday March 4 2010 at the John Murray Meeting Room at the Lightning Ridge Bowling Club.
It was the highest number of participants since the Youth Council was formed during Youth Week in 2008.
Representatives from Walgett, Lightning Ridge and Collarenebri used the opportunity to establish the executive committee for 2010.
The new executive includes vice-president, Mark Winch from Lightning Ridge; secretary, Danielle Rennie, also of Lightning Ridge; treasurer, Marcus Weatherall from Walgett; and publicity officer, Brent Richards, also of Walgett.
As the current title holders of the Best Small Council in NSW in 2009, the Youth Council will endeavour to improve the program in a bid to repeat the considerable success of previous programs.
The Youth Council has identified key areas to address during Youth Week, which takes place from April 10 to 18 2010.
These areas include entertainment, culture and dance, health and well being, and relevant youth information.
The council also discussed changes to leaving school ages and Centrelink requirements; Walgett Shire Council School to Work program; vandalism of Skate Park areas; NSW Youth Parliament; and after school activities at youth centres.
Youth development officer at the Walgett Shire, George McCormick said:
“This Youth Council … (is) regarded across the region as the model Youth Council, having been awarded
State and Regional awards for the programs and initiatives.”
