First part put in place

Construction of the Lightning Ridge Hospital is well underway with the first two modules arriving last Friday.

The hospital will consist of a total of 44 modules, which are all scheduled to arrive during the next four weeks.

Thiess construction spokesman John Higginbotham said, "the fit out of the modules has started this week and other tradesmen have come in to complete the work.

"The fit out of the 44 modules should take around 12 weeks to complete. However, due to the Christmas period break, the work won't be finished until early next year," he said.

After the modules are in place and fitted out work will commence on the carpark, driveway and ambulance garage.

This week Far West Area Health Service (FWAHS) upper western sector manager Heather Gray said another two modules will arrive by Friday.

"The first two modules that arrived at the end of last week is part of the aged care nursing home wing," she said.

She said the complete hospital facility would consist of a kitchen, an ambulance bay, the accident and emergency department, a laundry, offices, 20 aged care rooms and four acute beds.

"I think it's a milestone for Lightning Ridge and it's certainly very exciting for all the health staff and hopefully the community too."

Ms Gray said the same type of facility currently being built in Brewarrina is expected to be completed in January and many of the health staff were looking forward to moving into the new facility.

To date Ms Gray said the FWAHS have had a few meetings to discuss and determine staffing structure, with some advertising for positions having commenced.

"We would like to appeal to any local nurses to consider joining our new hospital next year," she said.

Ms Gray said the FWAHS would be finalising the number of jobs that would be created as a result of Lightning Ridges's new hospital by the end of this week.
