Extra funding pledged for State’s safe house

27 May, 2010 12:51 PM
The Lightning Ridge Women’s Safe House was one of nine services helping people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless in the State’s far west that Minister for Community Services Linda Burney announced would receive additional funding when she was in Broken Hill last Saturday.

Ms Burney announced that $175, 000 of one-off funding would be provided through the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP). This is in addition to the regular funding stream.

The other services that will receive a share of the funding are located in Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Coonamble, Dubbo, Brewarrina, Bourke and Walgett.

Ms Burney said that the NSW Government was pleased to be able to provide additional funding to these very worthwhile services.

“It recognises their achievements in tackling homelessness in far west NSW,” she said.

“Regional communities will benefit from the extra support for specialist women’s and children’s services including crisis accommodation for those affected by domestic violence.

“The safe houses offer counselling, referrals, liaison with other services and early intervention and parenting programs.”
